Home Lifelong Learning Library

In our school, Hebrew begins early. We have a Chug Ivrit for K4-2nd grade students and their parents that is an optional program, before the regular Sunday program.  This program uses music and movement and games  to introduce the family to simple Hebrew words and phrases.

In first grade the students learn letter identification.  In the second grade, the letter identification is repeated and spoken Hebrew is added so that the students begin to develop “an ear” for the language with simple commands, words, verbs and nouns.

In third grade we teach decoding and begin with the Mitgadem programs (for mastery Hebrew) and the Behrman house programs to teach reading, grammar, T’filah (prayers), and some language.  In Sixth grade the students add trope.

Then, in the 7th – 9th grade program, the students may choose to take Conversational Hebrew as an elective.  All of these classes can give students a “taste” of Hebrew so that they can participate in worship, and perhaps study Hebrew in high school and as an adult.
